Recently, weekly Abhidhamma Teaching notes
have been placed on-line.
Under the direction of resident
Teacher, John D. Hughes, the Centre has developed a library resource
that became a satisfactory 21st Century Centre.
by September
2002, we had catalogued 4,115 books. The catalogue is available on
Internet.
Our current development goal for the library this
year is to become more constantly a second rate library. At present,
the Collection has many examples of the Worlds best Buddha
Dhamma reference materials and artefacts.
We plan to make
these visible to the general public via Internet.
These items
require digital photographing and putting on-line.
Our Chief
Information Officer is Leanne Eames B.A. M.A.
Our Joint
Librarians are John D. Hughes Dip. App. Chem. T.T.T.C. GDAIE and
Anita M. Hughes RN Div 1.
Our new version of the development
plan has the integrity, wisdom and maturity to become a 21st Century
Super Centre. Our vision for the early 21st Century is to achieve
the status of a first rate library by World Standards of the
time.
In order to meet the objectives for our library this
year, the Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. is implementing
modern operating systems.
We require more library assistants
to train in our systems.

We
are an e-business.
The Centre has developed an affordable, user friendly
cataloguing system that can be accessed for on-site cataloguing and
is further developed for Internet access.
Our present choice for
cataloguing the Collection is the US software package
Organize...(Windows version). This is affordable and
scaleable.

the library catalogue
We seek multiple copies of Buddha Dhamma
literature in printed and electronic forms. Our Guardianship Policy
provides one copy of a text or commentary for loan, provided that we
have five copies in the Collection.
As the custodian of the
John D. Hughes Collection, the Centre is implementing security
protection systems to ensure that the Collection will be useable by
future generations.
We have a 500 year life for the library
in mind.
The Centres Hall of Assembly is to be upgraded
to an approved fire rating and providing more integrated external
sprinkler systems.
Our catalogue is updated regularly to add
new material. This is closely monitored to protect the Collection
from unauthorised access and deletion of information.
At
present we estimate we have a year and one half cataloguing backlog.
We are making new effort to overcome this
backlog.
This is detailed in our report to the
Standing Sub-Committee of the Senate inquiry into libraries in the
online environment 2002.
We operate two on-line Local Area
Networks (LAN) and are planning a third faster LAN suitable for
rapid viewing of photographs and tables.
We are an associated institution of The World
Buddhist University, Bangkok, Thailand.
Our web site
www.bdcu.org.au contains information about our Centre, a working
catalogue of the John D. Hughes Collection, Buddha Dhamma Teachings,
images and many blessings.
We are listed on the Australian
Libraries Gateway - a web based directory of Australian libraries
run by the National Library of Australia, Canberra, Australia.

We
are increasing the number of our websites. The John D. Hughes
Collection still requires monetary donations to fund these
worthwhile projects. We invite the donation of Buddha Dhamma texts,
commentaries and Dhamma material to assist with the growth of our
Collection now and throughout the 21st Century.
This will
help us create a more complete reference resource and allow Buddha
Dhamma Scholars and practitioners to research topics.
Your
donation will aid practitioners to maintain our Heritage Collection
and will aid in the development of the library, as we have a policy
of collecting five copies of a text before we lend one copy.
Your
contribution to the Collection will not only increase our librarys
holdings, but will also contribute to lifetimes of learning and
preserve Buddha Dhamma material for future practitioners. Our
guidelines specify 500 years at least.
No Tax deductibility
is available for these gifts.
Your donation is a meritorious
action and will set many good causes for this life and your future
lives.
