The Chan Academy* is part of the Buddhist
Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd.
The Chan tradition has been
taught at the Academy for more than two decades by the late Master John D.
Hughes and visiting Teachers, in accordance with the ancient Chan
instructions, adapted to be relevant to Australian society.
The
Academy's goal is to become a Centre of excellence of an
international standard for Chan and Sumie-e, by creating a suitable
location for the practice and teaching of these rare ancient
traditions in Australia.
Set amidst the beautiful Chan
gardens, the extensive library, and the rare Chan collection of
images and calligraphy, the Academy provides a suitable environment
to practice the Chan and Sumi-e traditions.

The Chan Academy* offers an unique opportunity to learn the Sumi-e tradition, a unique Buddhist meditation practice.
The traditions of teaching and 'The Way of the Brush' have been transmitted from Master to Master since the sixth Century and have been taught at the Academy for more than two decades.
The Chan Academy* offers this unique opportunity to
learn the bold and spontaneous art of Sumi-e painting.
Sumi-e
is an active meditation practise fusing the separate components of
painter, brush, ink, strokes and paper into one transcendental
experience.
A philosopy and technique of painting brought
from China to Japan 1500 years ago and developed to perfection as a
Zen discipline. The Chan Academy* extends an invitation to you to
share in these very special Sumi-e classes with Jan Bennett, who was a student of the late Master Andre Sollier and the late Master John D. Hughes.
Classes are held at the Chan Academy. Places are limited to only six students per class, so an urgent response is required to be a part of the ancient Chan tradition.
Chan and Sumi-e students also have the rare opportunity to view and purchase for themselves or as a gift:
Original Chan images
Chan prints
Chan calendars
Chan practise materials
Buddhist images
Books on meditation
Hand printed blessing flags
Flowering plants from the Centre's Chan garden.
